Chapter 7: The Light of Harambee
Text size
When Brian called home to Nairobi, his mother said what she always said.
"Harambee, Brian. You don't have to carry it alone."
Faintly, through the line, she hummed a few bars of "Wimbo wa Mwezi." The moon outside his window was, he was certain, hanging over Nairobi's sky in that same shape right now.
Harambee — pulling together — a word Kenyans had always held close. Since coming to Japan, Brian felt he'd been taught its meaning again and again, in different forms.
What light will he carry forward from here? Quietly, Brian chooses his next step.
